The stalactite cave
The signs of an ancient Sardinia.
The cave of the stalactites is located in Punta Giglio, the entrance to this karst cavity is 7 meters deep and already arriving at it we can understand that thousands of years ago, where today there is a canyon, a river flowed which in the millennia he was able to modify the rock to the point of digging this beautiful cavity which is now submerged. The name of the cave derives from the presence of numerous stalactites on the vault of the cave. This is evidence of the fact that in ancient times the cave was not covered by water, in particular during the last ice age, which began in the Pleistocene, i.e. 110,000 years ago, the coastline was a couple of km further offshore, and under Cape Hunting and Punta Giglio, there were prairies where they lived and fed the Megalocera and other species of the time.
Stalactites and stalgamites could have formed in those air spaces, but the bottom of the cave appears particularly smooth, polished by the fresh waters that have flowed there for millennia. IN some places the effects of small waterfalls are visible, which have dug into the rock, shattering it and smoothing the debris, making it spherical. The rock formations as we see them today represent the archives of the genesis and transformation of these places.

The cave of the stalactites is normally rarely inhabited by marine organisms, but it may happen that you have very rare encounters with a Marbled Torpedo, while the presence of small sized lobsters and forkbeard is more frequent
In this cave there is an aerial chamber in which it is possible to re-emerge and breathe fresh air thanks to the numerous openings not visible in the rock. The main chamber is characterized by the presence of numerous limestone formations and multicolored calcitic deposits. Numerous stalactites and stalagmites are visible, a clear sign that it is a living cave in which the karst phenomenon is still active.
